The Shih Tzu dog breed has its origin in Japan. This small sturdy dog is covered over with an abundant double coat of long hair lined with a woolly undercoat. Shih Tzu is a proud looking little dog and has hair above the nose growing upward. The breed is characterized by its long, flowing double coat; sturdy build; intelligence; and a friendly, energetic, lively attitude.
The Shih-Tzu is an alert and spunky little dog. Ideally, height at withers is 9 to 10½ inches; but, not less than 8 inches nor more than 11 inches. Ideally, weight of mature Shih Tzu dogs range from7 to 16 pounds.
Responsible and legit breeders breed dogs as close as possible to the breed standard, which does not recognize "toy" or "imperial" Shih Tzu. Shih Tzu far below the normal weight range for the breed may have health problems. If you want a truly tiny dog, select another breed like poodle. This is not the best.
